Poland supports Croatias EU entry before resolution of constitional crisis
WARSAW, June 5 (Hina) - Croatia should not be hostage to the European constitutional crisis and has Poland's support to become a full member of the European Union even before the constitutional issue is settled, Croatian Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks said in Warsaw on Tuesday after meeting his Polish counterpart Ludwik Dorn.
Poland strongly supports Croatia in its efforts to join the European Union, which should not be hampered by the refusal of a constitutional treaty. Poland believes this issue could be solved by amending the Treaty of Nice so that Croatia wouldn't be hostage to the crisis that emerged after the European Constitution was rejected at referendums in France and the Netherlands, Seks told reporters.
According to Seks, there is a chance that other EU members may also agree with this idea, although the Speaker of the German Parliament, Norbert Lammert, said at a meeting of EU parliament speakers about ten days ago that there would be no further enlargement without a constitution.
There are EU members who support such an idea, which was evident at a recent summit of parliament speakers in Bratislava, but there are also those like the Speaker of the Bundestag, who are against and who believe that adoption of a constitution should be a condition for further enlargement, Seks said.
Seks said that a solution to the constitutional crisis might come into sight at an EU summit in Brussels on June 21 and 22.
Seks, who is on a three-day official visit, also met Polish Foreign Minister Anna Fotyga and President Lech Kaczynski on Tuesday, and is due to meet the Speaker of the Senate, Marek Ziolkowski, on Wednesday. Talks with the Archbishop, Cardinal Jozef Glemp, are also scheduled.
