Kvarner-Gulf
The Kvarner Riviera is located next to Istria and is center on the main Croatian port of Rijeka, the busiest port on the Adriatic. The Gulf of Kvarner is a large, deep bay in the northern Adriatic that separates Istria from Dalmatia. The region's mild climate has played an important part in ihe growth of tourism. The Gulf of Kvarner is protected from harsh weather by the mountain range running from Mt. Ucka in the north-west to Gorski Kotor in the east and Ihe Velebit Range in the south-east. Summers are long and cooled by the maestral from the west, and although the hum brings sudden rushes of cold air in winter, temperatures rarely drop below freezing. The weather patterns explain the region's rich variety of vegetalion: Cres, Losinj and Krk number some 1300 plant species, Rab is known lor its evergreen forests and the luxuriant greenery around Opatija helped establish its reputation as a health resort.
