Centrum of Porec

Album: Porec, Region: Istria

Porec was particularly hard-hit by the Istrian plague epidemics, with the town's population declining to about 100 in the 17th century. The town was repopulated with refugees fleeing the Turks in the second half of the 17th century. With the decline of Venice, the town fell under Austrian, French and then Austrian rule before the Italian occupation that lasted from 1918 to 1943. Upon the capitulation of Italy, Porec was occupied by the Germans and damaged by Allied bombing in 1944 before becoming part of postwar Yugoslavia. Porec continually top the annual poll of best holiday resorts in Croatia, as organized by the Croatian National Tourist Board. Most visitors arrive by car, but you can fly in to Pula Airport to where Ryanair have recently commenced flights to. Istria is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea.
