Although its maritime industry thrived in the 17th century, Austria's 1719 decision to make Trieste and Rijeka free ports dealt the town a serious blow. Rovinj, a picturesque Istrian town is an oasis of beautiful nature and exceptionally agreeable climate. The old town of Rovinj is entirely contained within an egg-shaped peninsula, with the bus station just to the south-east. Istria is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea.
